Unspeakable Verse
Staring: Miriam Margolyes, Leo McKern, Louise Lombard, Hugh Laurie

A series of ten 15-minute programs of British and American comic verse

Comic Verse is incredibly appealing. Is it the combination of high-flown literary style and low comedy which makes us chuckle so?

Or does the attraction lie in the nonsense verse recalling happy childhood days?

Or is it the thought-provoking razor wit which reminds us wryly that we’re all in the soup together?

And then there are those gloriously rollicking rhythms which pulsate off the page.

UNSPEAKABLE VERSE is a series of short programs which will bring the wealth of British and American comic verse to a wider audience.

These poems will be read by the queen of character actors – MIRIAM MARGOLYES (“Blackadder”, "Cold Comfort Farm”, “I Love you to Death”, “Dead Again”) and one of our best loved British television starts LEO McKERN (“Rumpole of the Bailey”, “The Prisoner”, “Ryan’s Daughter”). Joining these undisputed masters of art will be HUGH LAURIE (“Blackadder”, “A Bit of Fry and Laurie”, “Jeeves and Wooster”, "HOUSE") and LOUISE LOMBARD (“The House of Elliot”, “A Black Velvet Gown”).

They will be reading well known favourites, combined with a lot of surprises, from the works of Hilaire Belloc, Ogden Nash, Edward Lear, Noel Coward, Cole Porter, Joyce Grenfell, G.K. Chesterton, James thurber, T.S. Elliot and many many more.

The Programs are directed and Produced by Patricia Houlihan. The settings are simple and beautifully lit, the graphics and the music stylish.
